Workers’ compensation insurance coverage is required by law in all U.S. states. Though the rules vary a great deal from one state to the next, the underlying principle, of protecting a business’ greatest investment, remains the same across the board. Your employees are the heart and soul of any business organization.

What Does Workers’ Compensation Insurance Do?

Workers’ compensation insurance provides insurance benefits to employees who are injured or become ill while working — as a result of the work they are doing. It provides for their medical expenses and some lost wages while they recover. The following types of injuries are generally covered by workers’ compensation coverage:

• A server slips on the wet floor in a restaurant and breaks her leg.
• A carpenter is injured while lifting a heavy tool over his head.
• A maintenance worker is injured by falling off a ladder.

The list of possibilities is as limitless as there are jobs and risks in all industries. There aren’t any businesses that are completely risk free. Keep that in mind as you explore your options for workers’ compensation insurance coverage.

Who Needs Workers’ Compensation Insurance?

In the state of Illinois, current estimates are that 91 percent of all people who work in the state have employers who are legally required to provide workers’ compensation coverage for them. Fines for failure to comply are steep and in Illinois, corporate officers may be found personally liable for the fines if the business does not pay the penalties.

While there are rare exceptions, the general rule of thumb for Illinois businesses is that if you have one employee, even if that person only works for you on a part-time basis, then you’re required to obtain workers’ compensation benefits on that employee’s behalf. Even employees who are family members must be insured and all coverage must begin the moment an employee is hired by the company.

There are rare exceptions to the workers’ compensation rules in Illinois. However, they are complex and it is best to consult with an attorney before failing to cover anyone you may be required to extend coverage to.

Workers’ compensation insurance is good for your business, good for morale, and good for the people who work for you. It inspires confidence among your employees that you’re going to do the right thing by them and it fosters a greater awareness and adherence to safety protocols throughout your business.
