Auto Insurance Coverage Options

Driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility. Unfortunately, not everyone takes that responsibility as seriously as you do. That leaves Illinois roads with a lot of uninsured and under-insured drivers.

Despite rigorous laws to protect drivers from potentially large financial losses resulting from auto accidents and hefty penalties throughout the state for failure to have adequate insurance, there are still a large number of people driving around with insufficient insurance liability insurance coverage, if they have any at all. That’s why drivers must protect their automobile investment. Explore these policies to find the best match for your coverage needs.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Insurance

Legal requirements for auto insurance vary from state to state. The state of Illinois currently offers the most significant amount of consumer protection in the U.S. requiring drivers to have vehicle liability insurance of $20,000 to cover the injury or death of one person in an accident, $40,000 to cover injury or death to multiple people in an accident, and $15,000 to cover damage to the property of another person. Of course, this is when you are determined to be “at fault” in the accident.

The problem with minimum coverage, though, is that it only pays up to the cutoff amount. If the extent of injuries or damage exceed this amount, you’re on the hook for the remaining amount. Additionally, this doesn’t cover damage to your own vehicle if you’re at fault or if the other driver is uninsured or underinsured.

Comprehensive and Collision Insurance

Comprehensive covers your vehicle in the event that it is stolen or in an accident — no matter who is “at fault” for the accident. Collision coverage involves more than just cars. It can be inanimate or stationary objects such as fire hydrants, light poles, and more. Comprehensive coverage includes theft, vandalism, floods, fire, and more. It’s the “catch all” insurance that costs more than liability, but also provides fuller protection. If you have a loan on your vehicle, you are generally required to carry adequate comprehensive coverage on the automobile.

If your vehicle is paid for, and you have adequate savings to cover the cost of replacing your car if it is stolen or hit by an uninsured driver, then you may skip comprehensive coverage in favor of a liability only insurance policy – provided it meets the state minimum insurance requirement. For all other drivers, that’s not a wise plan.

Also consider additional insurance coverage to handle uninsured drivers, loan or lease payoff, additional medical payments, custom parts, accessories, or paint, roadside assistance, and rental reimbursements.

Insurance is one of those things most people don’t think about it until they need it. Then, they are glad to have it and the peace of mind that goes with knowing you have a good policy from a company with a great reputation on your side.
